It’s Complicated: Love Has Two Left Feet

Love can be best defined as imperfect harmony. Love is the umbilical cord that ties two individuals together and even throughout its beautiful ugliness, it’s capable of turning rain into rainbows. Sometimes love doesn’t have rhythm but the sponsors of this magnificent word manage to stay on beat. Too often do we find ourselves judging our partner, instigating bad situations and trying to compare that feeling to what we think love is. Love isn’t before this and love isn’t after this; Love is the present.

What many of us fail to realize is that love is work. It’s a full-time job nourishing our partner with the nutrients it takes to maintain our relationship. Growth, sustainability, stamina, trust, loyalty and accountability are just a few.  Every relationship requires love vitamins in order to function. So why can’t people find love?

There are many different reasons but one that is far too common is the word attraction. Sure you should have some physical attraction to the person you’re dating. Who doesn’t want that? However, because we live in a “microwave society,” we want the sparks instantly. We want a person to walk up to us looking their best, confident, with all of their dreams and goals aligned ready to whisk us off our feet. We want a person who knows how to dress for every occasion, can cook up a cuisine in a matter of minutes and exercises to stay healthy rather than just to look good. When we take the time to get to know a person, we get to know how beautiful they are on the inside.

We live in a world where we worry too much about what others may think or say about who we’re dating, which often times leaves us single. The only thing constant in life is love and love isn’t perfect.  If this was a Dos Equis beer commercial, it would say something like, “Love doesn’t always dance in the rain but when it does, it has two left feet.”
